that shut down interstate 40 joust outside oklahoma city. texas got a double dose of bad weather, a 25-year-old man was killed near houston after a tree fell on his pickup. snow covered the ground in long view and turned dallas into a winter wonderland and blizzard warnings stretched from arkansas to pennsylvania. turning to mobile, alabama, windows were shattered and cars tossed off streets as this tornado touched down. >> oh my god, we need to go. it's right there. >> that's scary. several buildings damaged and several car accidents were blamed on the storm but no reports of serious injuries. emergency management officials tell cnn power has been restored to many customers, just over 7,000 in the dark, down from 23,000 last night. we head to mobile, christina leavenworth of w.e.a.r. in just about an hour weather officials will assess damage. christina, what are you hearing so far? >> reporter: good morning, carol. we are seeing a lot of damage here and it's widespread. the national weather service is saying the tornado touched down in five different locations, one of them here at murphy h

a special plan by the city to convert the memorial, here is part of what this city official told residents. the thousands of flowers, letters and prayers, the signs and photos, teddy bears and more will be gathered and processed into soil that will serve in the foundation of a future permanent memorial to honor the slain children and adults. officials say it will be a sacred memorial. the items will be collected and converted starting this week. >>> now, new information on that tragic shooting in upstate new york on christmas eve. two firefighters were shot and killed. two others were wounded, after responding to a call that a house was on fire. today we're learning more about the shooter, william spengler. police say the 62-year-old set fire to his sister's house, and then shot the firemen. police think he also killed his sister, her body was found in the burnt home. spengler left a suicide note. and here's part of it. i still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood i can burn down and do what i like doing best, killing people. but why he did it, police say they may never kn

a major snow event for the northeast i-95 cities. so we should be doing okay there. but still, nonetheless, snowy travel for many across the appalachians and northern new england. going back to wednesday, d.c., certainly impacted. pittsburgh, on back into cleveland, all these airports where we expect the snow, there will be severe weather in raleigh down to the south of this. but it's all go up to the north because the storm hasn't gotten into the thick of it yet. thursday, up into new england goes the meat of the storm. but backlash snow and wind. and on friday, we got the all go as we are now in a break between storms. but a break is the keyword there. but here comes the trough of low pressure sliding off to the great lakes and the rocky mountains. and that means a new storm will develop and impact these areas into saturday. a lot of people potentially heading back this weekend. more rain and snow. right now, it's too early to call from new york up to boston. rain or snow. but right now, d.c. looks like they're right on that rain/snow line. this one could be much more impactful for the n

and it's colder behind this storm system across the midwest, 20 in minneapolis and teens in rapid city. we have another storm we're tracking as it heads eastbound the next couple days. our current snowstorm producing more snow across maine. reports of over a foot across the many areas in new england and that snow still coming down. coastal areas dealing with rainfall an winds over 30, 40 miles an hour especially overnight. i her the wind howling. we have winter storm warnings for upstate new york, vermont, new hampshire and maine. and many of these warnings are in effect until early tomorrow morning because that wind, even after the snow is done, the wind will continue to blow snow around and produce white house in -- whiteout conditions. many places over a foot of snow on top of what we have on the ground. we're looking at another storm impact thing the midwest and areas hit hard by tornadoes. the storm system had severe weather with it, unusual for december in alabama, mississippi and the next storm is going to produce thunderstorms and areas of rain and basically heading northeast,

, obviously, any may mayor, particularly in new york city, are thinking about a city lock. we talked about this being a 9/11 situation. it's a chilling phrase, the way we responded to 9/11 having been long-term productive in terms of our resources and in terms of security. my question is to you, how do you you think about making policy in the aftermath of this, that doesn't fall prey, to making those kinds of mistakes? >> well, there be obviously, instances in which governments overreact, or react incorrectly in the wake, in the immediate wake of a national tragedy. and i think it is incumbent upon chief executives, members of the ll legislature to think thoughtfully, to take a deep breath, and gather the facts before rushing forward with a solution or another. i will say, though, with regard to these kinds of shootings and gun violence. i don't think that's our problem. >> right. i think in some respects, we have the opposite problem, when these incidents occur, you hear these voices, as you said, now's not the time to talk about what we do about this. or we don't went to politicize the t

from a major snow storm. the big cities of the east coast bracing for another. shibani: top of the hour every 15 minutes, we have lauren simonetti on the floor of the stock exchange. how are things looking? >> could be a lot worse but stocks are selling off for the fifth day in a row. the dow is down 67 points and the nasdaq down 9 and the s&p down 7. we were much lower earlier in the session. the vix index is spiking and volume to the downside today. is the second to last trading day of the year so this december rally, in jeopardy for the dow and the s and p and the nasdaq gave up the december gains but the financials go the market often times. as we look at the banks, here are the ones that are trading lower. bank of america down 1/2%, wells fargo trying to get into the green. as for the dow jones industrial average we have two stocks in the green, home depot is one of them and it turned into the positive after that strike at the east coast and gulf port was averted. american express is the other positive dow component. dennis: thank you very much. more on the kabuki theater in d.c. h

on the south side of the city of chicago. and i am a pastor of my church. i am here to support hr 308. the large capacity ammunition device act which i have been a co-sponsor of since march of last year. hearing reports that there are 264,000 -- rifles manufactured each year in the u.s. and of those a 5,443 are exported overseas and 248,000 are used right here in the u.s. a bitter irony that we are confronted with at sandy hook is that the firearm industry's association their headquarters are located just across the highway from the sandy hook elementary school and while focusing on large capacity weapons is important, i also have a bill, hr 66 a. legislation aimed at establishing a nationwide system for prohibiting unlicensed gun ownership and granting the u.s. attorney general broader authority on the program. as sad as the sandy hook incident is for all of us, we must be cognizant of the fact that gun violence has been terrorizing neighborhoods in chicago, detroit, houston, washington washington, d.c. for over decades now. one of my local newspapers, the "chicago tribune," reports
